Finding the Best Dental Implant Options in Lakewood, CO

If you are missing a tooth, you may be wondering whether a dental implant is your best option or whether a bridge or removable partial denture would make more sense. The honest answer is that there is no single solution that is right for everyone.

The best way to replace a missing tooth depends on several factors, including which tooth is missing, how long it has been gone, the health of your jawbone, your medical history, and what you ultimately want from your treatment.

What I tell patients most often is not to wait too long to explore their options. The sooner we evaluate the area, the more choices we are likely to have for rebuilding a healthy, functional smile.

What Are the Best Options for Replacing a Missing Tooth?

When someone comes to Northstar Dental with a missing tooth, we typically discuss three main tooth replacement options:

  • A dental implant
  • A dental bridge
  • A removable partial denture or flipper

Each approach has its own benefits, limitations, timeline, and cost. My role is to explain those differences clearly so that we can make the decision together.

Dental Implants

For many patients, a dental implant is the most ideal way to replace a missing tooth. An implant is a small post that is placed directly into the jawbone. After it has had time to integrate with the surrounding bone, we attach a customized dental crown that replaces the visible portion of the tooth.

One of the biggest advantages of a dental implant is that it stands independently. We do not need to reshape or place crowns on the neighboring teeth. This allows us to replace the missing tooth without unnecessarily involving otherwise healthy teeth.

Dental implants are also designed to provide a stable, predictable foundation for chewing, speaking, and smiling.

Dental Bridges

A dental bridge replaces a missing tooth by using the teeth on either side of the space for support. Those adjacent teeth receive crowns, which are connected to an artificial tooth that fills the gap. A bridge may be appropriate when an implant is not recommended because of bone availability, health considerations, treatment timing, or other individual factors. It can also usually be completed more quickly because we do not need to wait several months for an implant to integrate with the jawbone.

The main consideration is that the neighboring teeth must be reshaped to support the bridge. Even when those teeth are healthy, they become part of the restoration and may require additional care in the future.

Removable Partial Dentures and Flippers

A removable partial denture can replace one tooth or several missing teeth. Depending on the design, it may be made from acrylic, metal, or a combination of materials.

This is often one of the fastest and most affordable ways to fill a visible gap. In certain situations, we may also use a temporary flipper while the area heals or while a patient prepares for a more permanent restoration.

The tradeoff is that removable appliances are not always as functional or natural-feeling as a fixed bridge or implant. They can move while eating, and clasps may sometimes be visible when you speak or smile.

How Does the Dental Implant Process Work?

The dental implant process is completed in stages, which gives the implant time to form a strong connection with the jawbone. If the damaged tooth is still present, the first step may be removing it and allowing the area to heal. In some cases, additional preparation may be necessary to preserve or rebuild the bone.

During implant placement, I create a carefully planned opening in the jawbone and place the implant post into the space. We then allow the implant to heal for approximately three to six months, depending on the quality of the bone and the individual treatment plan.

Once this healing period, the bone gradually integrates with the implant. Once the implant is stable, we begin creating the final restoration. For a single missing tooth, this is typically a customized crown that attaches securely to the implant.

Although the process takes time, each stage is designed to create a durable and predictable result.

Why Should You Replace a Missing Tooth Promptly?

It can be tempting to leave a missing tooth alone, especially when the space is not visible. However, changes can continue to occur beneath the surface.

After a tooth is removed, the bone in that area may begin to shrink because it is no longer supporting a tooth root. As that bone changes, placing a dental implant in the future may become more complicated and could require additional treatment.

The surrounding teeth may also begin shifting toward the open space. The tooth above or below the gap can gradually move farther out of its natural position because it no longer has an opposing tooth to meet when you bite.

Over time, these changes can affect your bite, chewing function, gum health, and future treatment options. That is why I encourage patients to have the area evaluated even if they are not ready to begin treatment immediately. Understanding your options now can help you make a more informed decision later.

Are Dental Implants Worth the Cost?

Dental implants are an investment, and I understand that cost can be one of the biggest concerns for patients.

One helpful aspect of implant treatment is that the entire cost usually does not occur at once. Treatment is completed in separate stages. For example, tooth removal may be the first stage, implant placement may occur later, and the final crown is completed after the implant has healed.

This staged process can make the financial side of treatment more manageable. At Northstar Dental, we can also discuss financing options and ways to plan for more extensive care.

While implants may have a higher initial cost than some alternatives, they offer a strong prognosis and allow us to replace a tooth without altering the adjacent teeth. When properly planned and maintained, an implant can provide lasting function and stability.

Can Dental Implants Help Longtime Denture Wearers?

Dental implants are not limited to replacing one missing tooth. They can also be used to improve the stability of a denture. If you have worn dentures for many years, you may assume that implants are no longer an option. That is not necessarily the case.

Implants can sometimes be placed to help hold a denture more securely in position. An implant-supported denture may reduce movement and make it easier to speak, smile, and eat with confidence.

The first step is evaluating your bone, oral health, medical history, and existing denture. The process may be more straightforward than you expect, and it is never too late to ask what options may be available.

Choosing the Right Dental Implant Dentist in Lakewood, CO

Dental implant care requires more than simply filling an empty space. Your dentist should carefully evaluate your jawbone, bite, surrounding teeth, health history, and long-term goals before recommending treatment.

I received extensive implant experience through my general practice residency at the University of Colorado. Since then, I have continued completing advanced implant training throughout my years in practice. That education helps me evaluate each case thoughtfully and determine whether an implant, bridge, partial denture, or another approach will provide the best outcome.

Just as importantly, I believe these decisions should be collaborative. I will explain what I see, walk you through the advantages and limitations of each option, and answer your questions without rushing you toward treatment.
