Did You Know the Weather Can Cause Your Teeth to Ache?

There are certain weather conditions that could affect your oral health. For instance, extreme temperatures could result in oral conditions like tooth decay due to weakened tooth structure. Extreme conditions could also cause toothaches due to inflammation in your teeth.
Weather and Oral Health
If you didn't know, cold weather can cause toothaches. This happens when your teeth expand and contract in response to extreme weather conditions. If expansion and contraction happen aggressively, cracks can develop on your teeth. In that case, an underlying sensitive layer known as the dentin will be exposed. Therefore, you will experience toothaches that get more uncomfortable as the weather worsens. In some cases, you will also experience tooth sensitivity.
The enamel is the toughest tissue in your body. In extreme weather conditions, the changes in pressure alter the structure of the dentin and make it crack easily. This results in sharp pain and sensitivity as the underlying tissues are exposed. Also, this will cause your teeth and gums to be vulnerable to cold weather and extremely hot temperatures.
It is important to note that weather sensitivity is almost inevitable. However, those with good oral health are at a lower risk of severe damage of weather sensitivity. If you don't brush or floss your teeth regularly, you will have infections that can be worsened by weather sensitivity. Therefore, you are encouraged to maintain high levels of oral hygiene for better protection.
Your Teeth Face Many Dangers
Apart from cold weather, there are other habits that could affect your teeth. For instance, chewing on hard food items like ice could have similar effects on your teeth. Ice is not only cold but also very hard. Therefore, biting on it will damage the enamel and expose the underlying dentin. Call us for more information on how weather affects oral health.
