While it may be one of the strongest materials in our body, bone is still vulnerable to a number of potential problems, from injury to atrophy. Problems that develop in the jawbone can affect your facial appearance and prevent you from qualifying certain dental treatments. Luckily, we here at Northstar Dental specialize in a variety of bone grafting procedures designed to correct these issues safely and effectively.

Reasons for a Bone Graft

Dr. Adler may suggest a bone graft to accomplish several goals. The three most common reasons include:
•  Tooth Extractions: Bone grafting immediately after a tooth extraction can help preserve the socket and surrounding bone structure.
•  Saving a Tooth: Severe periodontal (gum) disease can damage the gums, connective ligaments, and supportive bone without treatment. We may be able to restore the bone and save a tooth if we perform a bone graft, before an extraction is necessary.
•  Dental Implant Treatment: Dental implants, which are next best thing to your natural teeth, are largely successful because they fuse to the jaw during a process called osseointegration. A bone graft can help you qualify for treatment if your jawbone is too thin or too soft to otherwise support an implant.

The reasons listed above share a common cause. When you lose a tooth, your lose the physical stimulation that keeps your underlying bone healthy and strong. Over time, the bone below the missing tooth will begin to resorb back into the bloodstream and deteriorate.

The only way to prevent this deterioration is to place a dental implant. The implant posts mimics the function of a tooth root, including the stimulation it provides to the jaw. In this sense, a preliminary bone graft before implant treatment will not only restore the bone, it will keep it that way for decades (once an implant is in place).

Types of Bone Graft Procedures

•  Ridge Augmentation: During this procedure, we make a small division in the ridge that supports your teeth, the alveolar bone. Once the bone has been separated, we will place graft material into the open space. Afterwards, the ridge augmentation should thicken, widen, or strengthen the bone enough to support an implant.
•  Socket Preservation: A socket preservation is typically preformed immediately after a tooth extraction. Also known as a localized ridge augmentation, a socket preservation helps you avoid bone deterioration after the loss of a tooth. In other words, this bone graft allows us to place dental implants much quicker.
•  Sinus Lift: Missing teeth in the upper posterior (back) region of your mouth are usually the hardest to restore with implants due to a lack of bone. During a sinus lift, we gently move the sinus membrane up and place graft material in the open space. Sinus lifts helps us place dental implants in places that would otherwise be impossible.

Regardless of which bone graft you receive, it usually takes several months to foster the growth of new, healthy bone. We may ask you to schedule a follow-up appointment so we can monitor the progress of your bone growth. Once we determine your bone graft is a success, we can move forward with implant treatment.
