Does gum chewing after eating clean your teeth?

Posted on 7/4/2022 by Northstar Dental
Does gum chewing after eating clean your teeth?Chewing gums after eating might be of benefit to your dental health. It helps in the breakdown of harmful bacteria on your teeth. It is not all about chewing gum, but what kind of gum are you chewing?

Chewing gum stimulates the production of saliva in the mouth, which plays a crucial function in your dental health. Saliva dilutes sugars and food particles which are harmful to your teeth and may cause tooth cavities or enamel breakdown if acidic. Saliva has calcium which is a good mineral for your enamel.

Chewing gum is not an alternative to daily flossing and brushing. Brushing teeth is essential since the toothbrush can reach between the teeth, unlike chewing gums. For general oral hygiene, ensure you brush your teeth daily; otherwise, you risk getting infected with tooth decay and gum diseases.

Which gum is best for your teeth

Chewing sugar-free gums is always the best option as they lack sugar which is harmful to your teeth and can aid the formation of tooth cavities. Sugarless gums with fruit flavors are not recommended for your teeth as they might be poor for oral hygiene. Always go for gums with ingredients that benefit your teeth, for instance, orbit gum or any other gum sweetened with xylitol. Xylitol is a natural sweetener that might be available in some gums. Xylitol plays a crucial oral in preventing tooth cavities when used.

Chewing gums can whiten your teeth but not to a greater extent as it is done by brushing your teeth. Furthermore, chewing gum leaves your mouth with fresh breath and strong teeth.

If you are wondering whether to continue chewing gums or not, book an appointment with us, our dentist will give you the way forward and ensure you achieve your desirable oral conditions.
