Posted on 5/24/2021 by Northstar Dental
How Does Mouthwash Help Keep Your Mouth Clean? If you are not using mouthwash, you should be. This addition to your oral healthcare routine does a number of things to help keep your mouth clean. Of course, you want to make certain you are using the right mouthwash. There are many options on the shelves, and some are better than others. If you are not sure which option to use, we can help. Just give us a call, and we will help you find the right mouthwash for your unique oral health needs. But first, take a look at a few of the reasons why mouthwash is so important.

It Does Not Wash Away Fluoride from Your Toothpaste

When you brush using a toothpaste that contains fluoride, the fluoride stays on your teeth for about half an hour. During this time, it is absorbed by your teeth and helps the body rebuild enamel. This can actually reverse very minor cavities and other damage done to the outer layer of your teeth. However, if you rinse out your mouth with water after you brush, this fluoride is washed away. Instead of using water, rinse out your mouth with a mouthwash that contains fluoride. It helps wash away any stuck toothpaste, plus it ensures all of your teeth are getting a fluoride treatment.

It Removes Food Debris

The saliva in your mouth is designed to rinse away any small particles of food and other debris that get stuck on your teeth. However, if you have dry mouth, you may not have enough saliva to effectively clean your mouth. Mouthwash can act as a situational replacement for saliva, washing away anything stuck on or between your teeth. This includes the bacteria that lead to cavities and bad breath. If you have persistent dry mouth due to a medication you are taking or other condition, talk to use about using mouthwash to help keep your mouth clean.
