How to Care for Your Child's Very First Tooth

Posted on 9/21/2020 by Northstar Dental
How to Care for Your Child's Very First ToothGood oral health care begins at birth, but we receive many phone calls from parents once their child has their first tooth wondering how to properly begin brushing, flossing and caring for the first tooth. These are all very valid concerns and questions and worth being addressed. First teeth are exciting on many levels, and ensuring that proper oral hygiene habits are established early is paramount in maintaining those healthy little pearly whites!

Baby's First Tooth

Although your baby may begin teething as early as 3 or four 4 old, generally the first tooth erupts somewhere around 6 months of age. Once that first tooth has erupted, it is important that you begin to brush it twice daily. Using a smaller, softer tooth brush, apply a small smear of toothpaste and brush that new little tooth. Make sure you get all sides of it, front, top, back and sides. Even though there is only one tooth, plaque and bacteria can still build up and begin eroding away the enamel.

When your baby has two teeth, it is time to introduce flossing into your daily routine. Gently work the floss in between the two teeth, making sure to get a little below the gum line on each tooth. This keeps the tartar, plaque and build up from getting beneath the gum line and causing problems for your child.

One of the most important ways you can care for your child's very first tooth is to give our office a call and schedule their first check up with our staff! We would like to see your child prior to their first birthday to do an exam and make sure that everything is moving along on schedule.

Congratulations on your new addition, and we look forward to growing together with you and your child.
