How to Take Care of Tooth Sensitivity

Posted on 6/20/2019 by Northstar Dental
How to Take Care of Tooth SensitivityWhen your teeth hurt from eating or drinking certain foods or liquids, it can make it unpleasant or difficult to eat. What can you do to help reduce tooth sensitivity and enjoy eating again? There are a few things you can do, but often the right course of action depends on the cause of this sensitivity.

Use Toothpaste for Sensitive Teeth

If you find that your gums and teeth hurt when you brush your teeth, you may need to use toothpaste designed for those with sensitive teeth. This toothpaste is designed to help numb and soothe your mouth. Be sure that the toothpaste you're using contains fluoride, of course. Otherwise, it may not really help your teeth at all.

Another change you may need to make is with your toothbrush. If you're using a hard-bristled toothbrush, you may need to replace it with one that has soft bristles.

Avoid Eating Certain Foods

Anything that's really hot, cold, or spicy may cause pain. Do your best to watch what you eat and avoid any of these foods and drink. Also, be sure to avoid anything that is highly acidic, such as certain fruit juices. These juices can cause further damage to your tooth, making it even more sensitive than it was before.

Deal with the Cause of the Sensitivity

While there are temporary fixes to dealing with tooth sensitivity, in many cases the only way to permanently deal with it is to fix whatever root problem is causing the issue. If your tooth is sensitive due to a cavity or other dental issue, the only real way of taking care of the pain is to come in to see us. We will examine the tooth to determine what's causing the pain and then talk to you about what can be done about it.
