Important Things To Know About Dental Implants?Tooth implants today remain the most innovative invention in the dental care industry. Dental implants aid in replacing the gap left after missing a tooth or more. They are fixed to help in anchoring dentures or implant-supported bridges. Due to their close resemblance to natural teeth, they help restore normal teeth functions as well as the patient's smile. They also offer great comfort and do not feel loose since they are firmly secured.

Types of Implants

Two categories of dental implants have been accepted for use. First is the endosteal implants and second, the subperiosteal ones. The latter are fixed just beneath the gum tissue and not in the jaw bone whereas the former or endosteal implants get fixed straight into the jaw bone and are the most commonly used type of implant.

A dental implant has three parts namely; the body, abutment, and crown. The post or body is the part that is fixed in the jawbone. The abutment is the portion that attaches to the body and is fixed in and above the gums. The crown which resembles natural teeth is attached to the abutment.

Dental Implant Surgery Procedure

Dental implant surgery entails several outpatient visits. There may be a healing period required in between some of the treatments, with some going for several months. The first step entails getting an oral examination done by a dentist and having X-rays taken. If it is noted that there are teeth in the site where the implants will be fixed they get extracted. Bone grafting may also be done if bone tissue is inadequate.

During the surgery, anesthesia will be administered and the underneath bone tissue exposed by making an incision in the gums. The implant's body is then fixed and left for healing and osseointegration to occur after which the abutment is fixed through a minor surgical procedure. Time is taken to allow for gums to heal which may be approximately two weeks after which the crown gets firmly anchored to the abutment.
