What Causes Stained Teeth?

Posted on 12/19/2022 by Northstar Dental
What Causes Stained Teeth? Are you worried about your discolored teeth? Or do your stained teeth affect your confidence while interacting with your peers? In the modern world, there exists quite a several factors that result in discolored teeth. Fortunately, there exists a variety of ways to counter the implications. What are the major causes of teeth discoloration?

Poor Dental Hygiene

You aren't shocked by this, are you? Failure to regularly brush and floss your teeth proves to be a massive agent of teeth discoloration. When you fail to floss or brush your teeth, food particles and bacteria tend to cling to the teeth resulting in stains. This is the major factor that, when paired with any other factor, contributes massively to teeth discoloration.

Tobacco Use

Tobacco users are at higher risk of having their teeth stained. Chewing and smoking tobacco and cigarettes not only gives rise to gum diseases and tooth decay but also advances the chances of teeth yellowing.

Foods and Beverages

Beverages such as soda, coffee, wine, and tea are associated with teeth discoloration due to their acidic nature. Furthermore, some starchy fruits such as apples, blueberries, citric fruits, and tomatoes have a staining effect on the teeth. It should be noted that most foods that stain clothes can do the same to your teeth.

Aging

As one age, their teeth' enamel is slowly worn out, leaving out a yellowish layer, the dentin. Therefore, aged people are associated with dark-looking teeth.

Certain Medications

Research indicates that certain forms of medications stain teeth. For instance, antihistamines, antidepressants, and high blood pressure drugs greatly contribute to teeth discoloration. Also, young children's teeth are stained when antibiotics such as tetracycline and doxycycline are exposed. Mouthwashes and oral rinses that contain chlorhexidine and cetyl peridium chloride have been identified as having similar effects on people's teeth.
With the above possible agents of teeth discoloration, it's time to work with our dentist and establish dental plans for maintaining a bright smile. Contact our offices and schedule your consultation today for pearly whites.
