Consider Individual Needs

Every family member should have his or her own personal plan for maintaining good oral health. Using the appropriate tools for home care will help to ensure the success of any strategy.

Fortunately, toothbrushes are not all alike, they come in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit individual needs and preferences. Kids for instance, usually go in for a lot of bells and whistles. Kid-sized brushes come with a built-in timer that plays a tune or flashes a signal when two minutes brushing time is up. It’s hard to learn to brush properly if the toothbrush doesn’t fit comfortably, a child-sized brush will make things easier.

It may be difficult to find the time that is needed to do a thorough job of brushing and flossing, you may find yourself thinking of all the other things that need doing. Many dental hygienists recommend trading in a manual toothbrush for an electric one to speed the process along. Find one with soft bristle heads and be sure to keep it charged up. Remember to replace the heads every three months or so, as needed. Older family members may suffer the inabilities that come with arthritis, an electric toothbrush can make a big difference for them. Always look for the Seal of Approval from the American Dental Association when shopping for your family’s toothbrushes.
